History
In History, we thought about the importance of Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech and the peace rally that followed in 1963. We understood that it was a significant event because so many people came to listen and take part in a march. Martin Luther King’s dreams were spread across the world via radio, television and newspapers. He made sure that he was always peaceful and he never used violence, which was why he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. We decided to re-enact this famous peace rally at Wilbury! We made our own signs with key messages – ‘love,’ ‘be kind’ and ‘end segregation.’ All the classes in Year 1 then joined together to march across our playground chanting ‘Don’t segregate, let’s integrate!’ We felt brave and proud to peacefully rally just like Martin Luther King and many others did back in 1963.
